๐ก Why Grade? The Profit Logic
A PSA-graded card commands a massive premium. A PSA 10 can sell for 5โ15ร the raw price. Even a PSA 9 typically fetches 2โ4ร the ungraded equivalent.
The formula: PSA sale price โ raw card cost โ grading fee โ platform fees = profit. FLIPR does this math for you in real time.
Example: Raw Charizard VMAX $12 + $25 grading. PSA 9 sells $80 on eBay (13% fee). Net: $80 โ $12 โ $25 โ $10.40 = $32.60.
Key rule: Only grade cards where PSA 9 or 10 price is at least 3ร the combined cost of raw + fee.
๐ The PSA 1โ10 Scale Explained
For Pokรฉmon, only PSA 9 and PSA 10 are typically profitable.
10
Gem Mint
Perfect in every way. Only ~1โ3% of submissions reach this.
9
Mint
Near perfect. Minor centering variance or tiny nick under magnification.
8
NMโMint
One slightly soft corner, minor surface marks, or off centering.
7
Near Mint
Light wear on two or more corners.
6
ExโMint
Light to moderate wear becoming obvious.
5
Excellent
Moderate corner/edge wear, some scuffing. No creases.
1โ4
PoorโVG/Ex
Significant wear, creases, tears. Almost never worth grading.
Pop Rate matters. 50,000 PSA 10s of a card = low premium. 50 PSA 10s ever = massive premium.
๐ฌ What Graders Actually Evaluate
All four must be near-perfect for PSA 10.
โ๏ธ
Centering
PSA 10 requires 55/45 or better both sides. PSA 9 allows 60/40 front, 65/35 back. The #1 reason modern cards miss PSA 10.
๐
Corners
PSA 10 needs four razor-sharp corners. PSA 9 allows one with slight fraying under magnification only.
๐
Edges
PSA 10 requires clean, crisp edges. Sliding cards together is the most common cause of damage.
โจ
Surface
Both sides checked for scratches, print lines, stains, creases. Holo foil is especially vulnerable.
๐งค How to Prep Cards for Submission
Step 1 โ Evaluate
- Use a loupe or 10ร magnifier on corners and edges under bright light.
- Use a ruler to measure borders โ don't eyeball centering.
- Only submit genuine PSA 9+ candidates.
Step 2 โ Clean (Carefully)
- Microfiber cloth only โ never paper towels or clothing.
- Wipe in one direction, not circular motions.
- Never breathe on the card face โ moisture damages holo foil.
Step 3 โ Sleeve for Shipping
- Perfect-fit inner sleeve โ penny sleeve over it.
- Semi-rigid card saver โ PSA now rejects top loaders.
- Seal with painter's tape, stack between cardboard in a bubble mailer.
No top loaders. PSA requires semi-rigid card savers only.
Always use gloves. Skin oils on holo foil are nearly impossible to remove.
๐ธ Grading Costs & Turnaround Times
| Service | Cost/Card | Turnaround | Notes |
|---|
| PSA โ Value | $25 | 60โ120 days | Declared โค$499. Most common for modern bulk. |
| PSA โ Regular | $50 | 30โ60 days | Declared โค$999. |
| PSA โ Super Express | $150 | ~5 business days | Declared โค$2,499. |
| BGS (Beckett) | $22โ$150+ | 45โ120 days | Sub-grades per criteria. BGS 9.5 "Black Label" is prized. |
| CGC Cards | $15โ$100+ | 30โ120 days | Growing acceptance, often faster/cheaper. |
| GameStop PSA partnership | $25/card + $9 flat | 90โ120 days | $9 flat per submission. 10 cards โ $25.90/card. 1 card โ $34. More cards = lower effective cost per card. |
GameStop math: 10 cards = $259 ($25.90/card). 1 card = $34. Direct PSA wins for single submissions.
๐ฏ Which Cards Are Worth Grading?
Grade These
- PSA 9 price > 3ร (raw + fee)
- 1st Edition Base Set holos
- Popular modern alt-arts, NM
- Low-pop cards (check PSA pop)
- Cards you pulled from packs yourself
- Vintage Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket
Skip These
- PSA 9/10 barely covers fees
- Visibly played or damaged
- Common bulk (trainers, energy)
- High-pop cards from mass-opened cases
- Condition clearly PSA 7 or below
๐ Tips to Maximize Your Grade
- ๐ฆPull from sealed packs yourself. You control the handling history.
- ๐ฆMeasure centering before submitting. Worse than 55/45 = PSA 9 at best.
- ๐ก๏ธStable storage. Warping = PSA 7 or lower. Never a garage or basement.
- ๐๏ธNever touch the card face. Skin oils show under grader lighting.
- ๐Check the PSA pop report first. Low pop = high value.
- ๐ฏ๐ตConsider Japanese cards. More consistent centering, higher PSA 10 rates.
- ๐งฎModel the PSA 8 case. If PSA 8 doesn't break even after fees, don't buy.
๐ฐ After the Grade: Selling Strategy
Where to Sell
- eBay: Largest audience, best for high-grade vintage. ~13.25% fees.
- TCGPlayer: Lower fees (~10.25%), good for modern $30โ$300 slabs.
- PWCC: Auction platform for $500+ graded cards.
- Facebook Groups: No fees, good for quick flips.
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Mistake #1: Not checking the math first. Run FLIPR numbers before buying.
Mistake #2: Grading visibly worn cards. If you see wear naked-eye, it's not PSA 9.
Mistake #3: Ignoring the pop report. 50,000 PSA 10s = tiny premium.
Mistake #4: Using top loaders. Semi-rigid card savers only.
Mistake #5: Not counting all fees. $40 paper profit can net $12 after grading + shipping + platform.
Remember: FLIPR factors in grading fees and platform commissions automatically.
